Nottinghamshire 1st start season with a close result

County 1st Team - 2017The Notts 1st team played their first match of the 2017/18 season at Leeds on the 11 November 2017.

The team included David Robertson, David Maughan and Kerri Scott who were all making their first team debuts. Alex Langley also celebrated the tenth anniversary of her first match for Nottinghamshire. The team should have played Mid Glamorgan in the morning but their late withdrawal from the league left the team with just one match on the first weekend. David Robertson played the first men singles and put up a spirited performance eventually losing in two 21/17, 21/16. This was a good debut given the difficult opponent who had won earlier in the day. David Maughan and Edward Thorpe played the other two singles, which included some good play but unfortunately we went down in both. The ladies singles followed with Kerri Scott going in at one, but unfortunately after a close game went down 21/17, 21/17. Serena Midha played number two and was never troubled winning in two sets 21/2, 21/5, which took the match score to 4-1 to Lancashire.

The menís doubles followed with the number one pair going down 21/7, 21/14. David Robertson and David Maughan joined together at number two and although they had never partnered another before went to three, but they lost their way at the end losing 21/15 in the third. This took the match score to 6-1 putting Lancashire in a winning position before the womenís doubles and mixed games had been played.

Alex Langley and Kerri Scott went in at number one, again forming a new partnership. This proved to be a tight game but we came out on top 21/18, 21/15. In the second ladies doubles Emily Witts was joined by Ellen Mahenthiralingam and they always looked in charge winning 21/9, 21/15. The mixed immediately followed with Matthew Stacey and Alex Langley joining together at 1, this was an exciting match with Matt and Alex losing the first 22/20, but they came back to win in three taking the second 21/17 and the third 21/14. In the second mixed David Maughan and Emily Witts played a solid game always looking in charge of a close game winning 21/17, 21/16. The womenís doubles and the mixed result meant that we brought the score back to a 6-5 defeat, which given we were 6-1 down was a good turnaround.

The team had given a good account of themselves given the loss of some key players and the new players that had joined the first team for this match.
