IMPORTANT CHANGES TO THE ADMINISTRATION CHARGE OF BADMINTON ENGLAND DBS CHECKS

Please note that from 1st September 2015, Badminton England will no longer be paying the £8 per person administration charge for a DBS check. This cost will instead be passed onto the applicant.

We operate our DBS checking service under the umbrella organisation GB Online Disclosures, and while the actual DBS check for volunteers is free, there is a charge to us of £8 per DBS check that passes through the online system. This is charged by GB Online Disclosures directly to Badminton England, and, for the last 3 years, we have willingly paid this charge on behalf of our paid and volunteer workforce.

We are keen that this change is not seen as a weakening of our commitment to safeguarding children and we hope that you will understand that this decision has not been made lightly and must be seen in the context of a resource measure for the education and training team, both in terms of the time taken to process payments and of course the £8 charge itself.

The process for the DBS will not change, registration for the service is still via an email to the safeguarding team of Badminton England and we will send you an individual link. When the application has been completed and verified, the cost: £8 for volunteers, or £52 for a paid coach must be paid by you in order that the application progresses. Failure to pay will mean that the DBS application does not progress and you will receive regular email reminders to pay.

Further information on the DBS process is available from:

GUIDANCE FOR PARENTS TO POSITIVELY SUPPORT THEIR CHILD IN SPORT

The Child Protection in Sport Unit has recently produced best practice guidance for parents on how to support and encourage their child/children positively when participating in sport.

For a useful checklist on DO’s and DONT’s for parents with areas to consider: pre match, during match and post match please click here.

FREE ONLINE TRANSGENDER AWARENESS TRAINING

Many thanks to GIRES (Gender Identity Research and Education Society) for agreeing that we can offer their free online training on transgender to our badminton personnel.

This course is suitable for anyone in badminton to help to understand trans issues and, importantly, how you can support trans badminton players in your club. Access to the training can be found here.

For further information please click here.

VERIFIERS REQUIRED

As we are approaching the busiest time for coach re-registration we are ideally looking for all clubs to appoint at least one Badminton England DBS verifier. This will make the process quicker and easier for your own coaches.

If you or anybody at your club would like more information about becoming a verifier please have a look at our website www.badmintonengland.co.uk/dbs for further information and an application form.

There is also the option to have an application verified at a crown post office branch at a cost of £8.75, which can often be more convenient in remote areas. Please contact safeguarding@badmintonengland.co.uk for details as to how this process works.
