Winning Weekend For Veterans

O65s Team - Stewart Robey, Joan Morley, Colin Abbott, Pam Wallace, Bill Houghton, Barbara Henley, Peter MorleyOn 13th/14th January 2007 our Nottinghamshire County Veterans teams played in the new format of the Yehlex Inter County Championships.

The over 65's, over 50's and over 40's 1st team played at the National Badminton Centre, Milton Keynes. The over 60's and over 45's played at the Hertfordshire Sports Village, Hatfield. The over 40's 2nd team played at the Fenton Manor Sports Centre, Stoke on Trent.

The O/65's playing in the Premier division, won all their five matches and retained The Kay Brindle Trophy for the third time in succession. They beat teams from Yorkshire, Cumbria, Lancashire, Surrey and Hampshire. Their overall rubbers total being an excellent 13 for, with only 2 against.

Barbara Henley (Redhill BC) & Joan Morley (East Leake BC) were unbeaten in the ladies doubles.

The O/60's playing in the Premier division, had six matches. They won three, had two winning draws and lost only to Kent, who won the event. Notts finished third overall. They played Buckinghamshire, Lancashire, Surrey, Yorkshire, Staffordshire and Kent.

The O/50's playing in division 1A, played Lincolnshire, Cheshire, Durham, South Scotland and Buckinghamshire. They beat Buckinghamshire,

Lincolnshire and Durham, had a winning draw with Cheshire and a losing draw to South Scotland. At the end of the tournament both Nottinghamshire and South Scotland had the same points and the winner was therefore determined by the result of the match between the two teams. Scotland came out on top and go up to the Premier division.

Nottinghamshire O/50's came a very close second. Over the weekend the O/50's only lost four rubbers. Robert Dumelow and Jenny Abbott (both Nottingham Veterans BC), were unbeaten.

The O/45's playing in the Premier division, had some very tight games against Surrey, Lancashire, Worcestershire, Essex and Avon but unfortunately were unable to win any of their matches.

The O/40's 1st team playing in division 1A, played Warwickshire, Norfolk, Shropshire and Buckinghamshire. They played each team twice over the weekend. They had one winning draw, two losing draws and four losses. They came 3rd overall. They would no doubt have had better results except for the unfortunate injury to their number 1 man Paul Simpson in the early stages of the competition.

Chris Newton (Bingham BC) and Loraine Buck (Forest BC) had a notable win over England stars Tim Hudson-Church and Linda Sawyer (Norfolk).

The O/40's 2nd team playing in division 2A against Cambridgeshire, Cheshire, Durham, Lincolnshire and Northumberland, fought hard but were unable to win any of their matches. However all enjoyed themselves.
