Two schools from Nottingham, The Minster School (Southwell) and Brunts Academy (Mansfield), are celebrating after their girls badminton teams qualified for the finals of the Center Parcs National Schools Badminton Championships.

Minster's years seven, eight and nine team and Brunts Academy's year ten and 11 squad have successfully progressed through the regionally stages of the Badminton England event which is one of the biggest school badminton tournaments in Europe.

This year record breaking entries have seen 6,140 school badminton teams from over 1,600 secondary schools and more than 31,000 children getting on court to take part in four rounds of action a 35 per cent increase in participation levels from previous years.

The Minster School and Brunts Academy's achievement and on-court success means they will head to Center Parcs Sherwood Forest for the finals on the weekend of the 21-22 April.

They will compete against eight other schools in their age group categories in a bid to become national badminton champions.

Adrian Christy, chief executive for Badminton England, said: "We would like to express our congratulations to both The Minster School and Brunts Academy for reaching the finals.

"It is a highly competitive and prestigious tournament that draws out talent and entries from schools right across the country.

"With record entries this year it is fantastic to see so many children getting on court and participating in the sport; a great indication that inspiration from the Olympics is creating a real sporting legacy.

"The standard of play continues to go from strength to strength each year, so for them both to reach the national finals is an outstanding achievement".
