Second Team Finish with a Flourish

The final weekend of the 2017-18 Senior County Championships season on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th March saw Nottinghamshire's 2nd team take on Leicestershire 2, Shropshire 1 and Lincolnshire 1 at Babington Academy, Leicester.

Notts made a promising start against home side Leicestershire 2nds; Ed Thorpe, Bryony Taylor and Amy Keady all winning their respective singles matches in convincing fashion. Pairings of Ben Gardner/Ed Thorpe and Amy Keady/Megan Attewell both secured wins in the doubles events but Notts were just unable to bring home the win we deserved in the mixed doubles, eventually going down narrowly 5 rubbers to 6.

Shropshire provided Notts’ next opponents and started strongly, taking 4 from 5 of the singles encounters, Amy Keady producing a battling performance to win in three games. But Notts rallied in the doubles events taking 3 from 4 rubbers with pairings of Ben Sanders/Manik Chakravarti, Emma Hooper/Bryony Taylor and Amy Keady/Megan Attewell all securing valuable victories to leave Notts just one rubber behind with the match poised at 4-5. Despite close-fought mixed doubles rubbers Notts couldn’t secure a further win leaving Notts feeling somewhat hard done-by with a final match score of 4-7 in the opposition’s favour.

Such had been the close nature of the division that with one round of matches to play a total of five teams were separated by just five rubbers in the standings, each of which could be relegated if results did not go their way. Already-relegated Lincolnshire provided Notts’ final opponents of the season, and Notts made a strong start in the singles events with Ed Thorpe, Manik Chakravarti, Will Peck and Amy Keady all securing convincing victories. Doubles pairings of Sanders/Chakravarti, Gardner/Thorpe and Keady/Attewell all won in straight games and Thorpe/Attewell took an additional mixed doubles to give Notts their biggest win in over 2 years with a final score of 8-3.

The final Division 2 Central table sees Notts 2nds in 5th place on 33 points having won 3 from 7 ties, and secures our position in the division for next season.
