Nottinghamshire’s 50s and 60s teams both won their respective League matches this season.
The 50s playing in the Midlands West League then played Cambridgeshire the winners of the Midlands East in a Play Off, which Nott’s won 9-3 and progressed to play in the League Finals.
Nott’s 60s playing the Midlands League also won all their League matches comfortably.
Both teams then represented the Midlands region and competed in the Masters County Championship Finals held at Birmingham University over the weekend of 23/24th April.
Nott’s 50s in the semi-finals put up a strong fight against West of Scotland. It was a tough match with seven games going to a third set but Nott’s were unable to overcome the all-round strength of the opposition, Nott’s winning two ladies and two Mixed rubbers resulting in a 8-4 win to the West of Scotland team.
Andy Cokayne and Jane Smith playing at 2nd Mixed were unlucky not to win their Mixed when losing 29-30 in the third end.
Loraine Buck and Karen Gleave were both unbeaten in the match, playing together in the Ladies, Loraine with mixed partner Adam Buck. Karen with mixed partner Alan Bowmer.
The 50s then played in the 3rd/4th Play Off against Devon. Nott’s won two Men’s, all four Ladies and all four Mixed rubbers resulting in a 10-2 win.
Result for the over 50s event; 1st Hampshire, 2nd West of Scotland, 3rd Nottinghamshire, 4th Devon.
Nott’s 60s in the semi-finals played favourites Surrey. Surrey having several England players in their team did not have it all their own way when Nott’s top men’s pair Mark Attewell and John Fletcher took England players John Molyneux and Ian Purton to three sets, then beating Surrey’s 2nd Men’s pair in two straight sets.
Nott’s fared well in the Mixed but were unable to overcome their opposition. Jacqui Burton and Jerry Deacon at fourth mixed played well when taking their match to a third set but without success.
The final score, 11-1 to Surrey.
The 60s then played in their 3rd/4th Play Off against Yorkshire, which proved to be a very exciting and tense match. Nott’s won three Men’s and three Mixed rubbers resulting in a 6-6 score for both teams. On count back, both teams were still level on games at 14-14. The result came down to points, Nott’s winning the match with 526 points to Yorkshire’s 480.
Result for the over 60s event; 1st Surrey, 2nd Hampshire, 3rd Nottinghamshire, 4th Yorkshire.
Outcome for both Nottinghamshire teams, they are the 3rd best teams in the country – no mean feat.
