12th February 2023
Nott’s Masters 45s and 55s teams entertained Shropshire and Lancashire respectively over the weekend of 11th & 12th February.
The 45s had quite a battle against Shropshire. After losing two Men’s and three Ladies rubbers, Nott’s were 5-3 down before the Mixed. The team had to win all four Mixed rubbers to gain an outright win.
Top Mixed pair Paula Wilson and Simon Vanderwalt played a skilful match to watch, winning their rubber 21-16, 22-20. However, the match of the day in my opinion was from Steph Clarke and Graydon Peacock playing at 2nd Mixed. It was quite a battle but they pulled through winning in three sets 21-16, 14-21, 21-17. The score now level at 5-5.
3rd Mixed pair Alison O’Neill and Con Truong comfortably won their match in two straight sets. As did 4th Mixed pair Kate Hicks and Darren Bridge. Final score a good 7-5 win to the Nott’s team.
The team next play the return match against Worcestershire on 26th February, hoping to improve their previous 3-9 loss against the league favourites.
Nott’s 55s team didn’t have it all their own way when playing Lancashire. The team won three Men’s and two Ladies rubbers, 5-3 up before the Mixed. Adam and Loraine Buck at top Mixed won in three sets while Karen Gleave and Adrian Mateo narrowly lost their rubber 22-24 in the third end. Score 6-4 to Nott’s. Sarah Heathcote and Neil Franklin did the honours winning in two straight sets. Final score 7-5 to Notts. The team remain in top position in the League.
Adam and Loraine Buck were both unbeaten in the match. Playing together at top Mixed and Adam with Men’s partner Adrian Mateo at 1st Men’s. Loraine with Karen Gleave at 1st Ladies.
The team next play the return match against Lancashire at Bolton next Sunday 19th February. A win then would make them favourites to win the North Division league and join Nott’s 50s team in the League Finals at Birmingham University over the weekend on 22/23rd April.
