5th April 2023
Three Masters Teams travelled to Yorkshire, Cheshire and Shropshire on Sunday 2nd April, all completing their final League matches of the season.
Notts 40s, against Yorkshire, had a great start when winning all four Men’s and two Ladies rubbers. Unfortunately, Nichola Stokes had to retire after sustaining an injury during her first rubber of the match. Therefore having to concede three rubbers to Yorkshire.
The team won four Men’s, two Ladies and two Mixed rubbers resulting in an 8-4 win.
They finished in 4th place overall in the North division.
The 55s team travelled to play Cheshire; they too had their problems when two Notts 55s Ladies were unable to play due to illness. Jacqui Burton from the 65s team was asked to play at short notice to complete the team. However yet another problem arose. The 60s playing Shropshire 1st found themselves short of a lady, again due to illness.
Fortunately the 55’s team had already won their division and allowed Jacqui to play for the 60s as the 60s team had to win their match against Shropshire 1st to win their division. A win for the 60s would take them through to the League finals.
After having to concede two Ladies and one Mixed, the 55s ended up winning three Men’s, two Ladies and three Mixed rubbers resulting in an 8-2 win.
The 55s, having won all their matches in the North division this season, progress to play in the League finals at Birmingham University over the weekend of 22/23rd April.
The 60s team against Shropshire 1st, had to win to ensure they remained League leaders. Both teams were without a couple of their top players. As usual, Shropshire’s woman were strong and Notts battled out close rubbers with Jacqui Burton and Wendy Walton-Towle taking both their Ladies rubbers. Lesley Griffin and Julie Peart just losing out against Shropshire’s 2nd Ladies pair.
However, Notts having the greater depth of strength gained the vital win.
The team won all four Men’s; three Ladies and all four Mixed rubbers resulting in a strong 11-1 win to Notts.
The 60s team now join Notts 50s and 55s teams in the League Finals at Birmingham.
A very successful day for all three teams.
Julie Peart, Notts 60s team captain has asked me to thank Karen Gleave (55s captain) for allowing Jacqui Burton to play for the 60s at the last minute, rather than playing for the 55s. Thereby making the sacrifice in the counties interest. Also a thank you to Jacqui for her flexibility.
With a difficult year with players for various reasons, Julie would like to thank all those who have stepped in, often at the last moment.
