91 years old
Throughout his life Ray was a passionate sportsman excelling at Basketball for Great Britain, Badminton for Nottinghamshire, and in his later years Disability Bowls for England. He also played Tennis at the West Bridgford Tennis club.
Ray initially belonged to the Old Boy’s Association, which was formed in 1952, where he played mainly basketball, at which he went onto win 21 England international caps. Football soon became the Old Boy’s second activity and badminton followed in 1958.
Ray’s passion for sports was accelerated by becoming one of the founder members of the Meadows Old Boys Badminton Club, which was formed back in the early 1960’s.
Sports played a significant part in his life.
When playing badminton at the Old Boys, it was not long before Ray was acknowledged as the leading player in the club.
From 1967 to 1970, Ray was both Secretary and Match Secretary for Meadows Old Boys B.C.
He was first selected to play in the Nott’s County 3rd team, followed by selection for the 2nd and 1st teams – mainly as a singles player. Ray was on both the Notts Senior Selection Committee and Junior Tournament Committee. He also spent many years coaching the County Schools under 16 Badminton Squad.
Ray made over 49 appearances for Nottinghamshire Senior County in 10 consecutive years 1964-1981. At the age of 45, he and Marshall Storey won the All-England Veterans Badminton Tournament at their first attempt.
Ray spent time umpiring for Badminton and he was a linesman in tennis tournaments.
Another of Ray’s occasional sports was Golf, which he enjoyed later in life.
Something that Ray was incredibly modest about was when in 1960 he was selected to play Basketball in the preliminary qualifying rounds for the Great Britain Olympic Team held in Rome. He proudly kept the badge from his blazer.
Ray will be greatly missed by both family and friends.
Rest in peace Ray.
