Notts Trio In England Squad

England today named a 12-strong squad for the 10th World Mixed Team Championships at Glasgow?s Scotstoun International Sports Arena from June 11-17.

Leading England?s 10th Sudirman Cup challenge will be World and Commonwealth mixed doubles champions Nathan Robertson and Gail Emms, who were at Scotstoun yesterday to see the facilities and take part on a Bank of Scotland Roadshow for Glasgow schoolchildren. Robertson and Emms, the Olympic silver medalists, are unbeaten in a live rubber in Sudirman Cup action.

Commonwealth women?s singles champion Tracey Hallam, world mixed doubles runners-up Anthony Clark and Donna Kellogg, and world men?s doubles runners-up Clark and Robert Blair are also in a strong squad as England look to improve on fifth place in Beijing two years ago.

For Blair the Cup will mark a return to his native Scotland ? he was born in Edinburgh.

Seventh seeds England face matches against holders and five-times Cup winners China, fourth seeds Malaysia and sixth seeds Thailand in Group 1A. Second seeds Denmark, take on former champions Korea and Indonesia, and Hong Kong in Group 1B.

After the group stages England will tackle a play-off against the equivalent placed team in Division 1B but head coach Ian Wright will be targeting a place in the semi-finals on Saturday, June 16 ? and will be looking to England?s strength in doubles to help gain the second place in the group which would put them into the last four.

The squad includes 20-year-old Rajiv Ouseph, who will be making his Cup debut after edging out double English National champion Nick Kidd (Bucks) for the second singles place behind world No 14 Andrew Smith.

In the women?s singles Jill Pittard, the Land Rover engineer and the only member of the squad who is not a full-time badminton player, takes the second slot behind Hallam. That means no place for England?s other National singles champion Elizabeth Cann (Jersey).

Doubles specialist David Lindley completes the six-man line-up while experienced Joanne Nicholas and Natalie Munt offer back-up to European champions Emms and Kellogg in the women?s doubles.

The coaches include new Malaysian coach Tan Kim Her.
