Clark Retains National Badminton Titles

Nottinghamshire's Olympic badminton star, Anthony Clark, convincingly retained his two titles at the National Badminton Championship held at the Manchester Velodrome over last weekend.

Firstly in the Mixed Doubles, he partnered Donna Kellogg (Derbys) to a very convincing and dominant 21 - 9, 21 - 7 win over Robin Middleton and Liza Smith. This was Anthony and Donna?s second successive mixed title having beaten world champions Nathan Robertson and Gail Emms the previous year. Unfortunately, Gail Emms was ill this year and could not compete and probably robbed the large crowd at the Velodrome of another magnificent final.

Anthony and Donna are currently ranked 9 in the world and the win will give them a great boost going into the All England Open Championships in Birmingham next month.

But Anthony's day didn't end there. In the last final of the day, he reformed his old partnership with Nathan Robertson (Notts) and again won very convincingly 21 - 11, 21 - 12 over Richard Eidestedt and Chris Langridge. This was the fourth men's doubles national title for Anthony and Nathan and was a reforming of their wonderful earlier partnership when they won the National title in 2002, 2003, and 2004. They were also European silver medallists in 2004 but since then Nathan has concentrated solely on his mixed doubles. It remains to be seen whether the partnership will reform permanently but they definitely showed that they are a truly world class pair.

For Anthony, it was even better as this was his seventh national men's doubles title on the trot and now Simon Archer's record of eight straight titles is in his sights. Anthony says 'it was great playing with Nathan again and to win two titles at the Nationals is great but to now have won seven consecutive men's doubles is beyond a dream?

Anthony has some important tournaments coming up including the Thomas Cup Team Championships and the All England. But his big goal for 2008 is the Beijing Olympics in August. 'Having been to the Athens Olympics in 2004, I would love to bring home a medal, of whatever colour, from Beijing'.
