So near yet so far for Notts 50s Team

Over 50s Masters TeamOriginally the Premier teams, including Notts over 50s team, playing in the annual Masters County Challenge competition, were due to play at the National Badminton Centre at Milton Keynes over the weekend of 14/15th January. Unfortunately, Milton Keynes was double booked and the event was rearranged to be played at the Jubilee Sports Centre, Nottingham a week earlier over the weekend 7/8th January.
The format of this team tournament is each team consists of one Ladies, one Mens and two Mixed pairs, the Mixed to be played in strength order.
On Saturday, Notts got off to a good start when they beat Lancashire 3-1. Notts were then due to play Essex who withdrew from the competition. Notts final match of the day was against Cambridgeshire, which ended in a 2-2 draw.
On Sunday, they played favourites Hampshire. It was a close encounter but Notts were unable to overcome the all-round strength of the opposition. Andy Cockayne and Dave Barratt losing an exciting battle in their mens match, going down in three sets. While Matt Tongue and Jane Smith won the only Notts rubber 17-21, 21-18, 21-19. Score 3-1 to Hampshire.
Notts then drew 2-2 against both Surrey and West of Scotland.
Notts 50s team finished joint 2nd on five points with Surrey and West of England but finished below both teams on games difference.
This seasons over 50s County Challenge Champions – Hampshire.

Notts 50s next play Away to Cambridgeshire in the League Championships on February 5th. A win would make Notts winner of the Midlands League and they would go through to this seasons League Finals over the weekend of April 22/23rd at Birmingham University.
