All England Masters Championships 2024
Three Nott’s Masters player’s competed in the All England Master’s Championships held at Hatfield Sports Centre over the weekend of 12/13/14th April. All three players reaching the finals in their respective age groups.
Nott’s O50s players Carl Jennings (Forest B.C.), Paula Wilson (Bingham B.C.) and O75s player Ken Tantum (Southwell B.C.).
Carl Jennings seeded 1st in the over 50s singles event lost in the Final to 2nd seed Carsten Loesch from Denmark in three sets 7-21, 21-15, 18-21.
Carl with men’s partner Mark King (Leicestershire), 1st seeds, beat old rivals in the final, Justin Andrews (Somerset) and Simon Gilhooly (Essex) seeded 3rd, score 21-13, 21-19.
Carl having won the English Nationals with Paula Wilson last December, after which the pair were selected to play for England against Scotland in March, teamed up again at the All England and were seeded 3rd in the O50s Mixed competition.
Having beaten the 1st seeds, Danish pair Carsten Loesch & Dorte Steenberg 21-19, 21-6 in the semi-final, they next played 2nd seeds Morten Aarup & Janne Vang Neils also from Denmark. As Paula remarked “It was close, but we didn’t quite make it”. Score 17-21, 21-16, 21-17 to the Danes.
Ken Tantum with men’s partner Roger Baldwin (Essex) lost to Mike Cox (Avon) and his Danish partner Harry Skydsgaard in the quarter final 21-17, 21-9.
Ken with mixed partner Sue Awcock (Sussex) lost in the over 75s Mixed Final against Ian Brothers (Kent) and Jan Hewett (Worcestershire) in three sets 21-15, 13-21, 23-21. So near yet so far, for Ken and his partner.
